In this painting, I have used the image of the Oni, one of the most recognizable figures in Japanese folklore. However, my intention was not to portray a purely evil monster. In many Japanese narratives, the Oni is not simply a symbol of evil; it can also represent anger, fear, sorrow, jealousy, or the deep emotional wounds that people carry within themselves.

For this reason, the central figure in the artwork is neither fighting nor fleeing. Instead, she sits in silence and meditation, acknowledging the presence of the Oni. To me, this encounter resembles an inner dialogue rather than a battle. It is as if the figure is attempting to confront the darker aspects of herself and, rather than suppressing them, move toward understanding and inner peace.

Other elements of the painting-including the traditional Japanese setting, the twisted tree in the background, and the soft glow of the lantern—contribute to creating a space suspended between tranquility and turmoil.

It is a place where the boundaries between the outer and inner worlds, between reality and the mind, become uncertain.More than a depiction of the struggle between good and evil, this work is about balance. It serves as a reminder that sometimes the greatest monsters live within us, and that overcoming them begins not with destroying them, but with recognizing and accepting them.
